are getting privately trained use handguns in the wake of sandy hook shootings. other states are going farther. arizona's attorney general proposing to change the state law that would allow an educator in each school to carry a gun. the "l.a. times," the city of los angeles collected more than -- this story is unbelievable. they collected more than 2,000 firearms part of a guns for groceries buyback program. 75 assault weapons were included in that and two rocket launchers were turned in for cash. >> they got steak and shrimp for the rocket launchers. what about teachers with guns in classrooms? >> i mean, it's amazing to me. i had randy wine gart ten of the american federation of teachers on my show last night. it's outrageous to me on two levels. one, you're going to put more guns into schools it to try to deal with getting guns out of the school. you don't have money for students. you don't have money for sports and arts. you don't have money for anything you need in school, but you're going to find money to buy guns, bullets and training for teachers? where did the conservatives come up wi

, since the sandy hook elementary school shootings on december 14th, there have been almost 250 gun deaths in north america or just about 13 gun deaths for each day, and even this morning we learned there was a shooting at a police station in camden, new jersey. so, you know, you mentioned gun control as an issue that the president needed to really get working on pretty quickly in january. how is that going to compete with other agenda items and how will the president and i would also say the outside groups really keep the pressure on to make sure that something meaningful happens? >> you know, that's a very good question, karen, and in a sense i wonder if it's already too late. if you don't act on these things quickly, people stop talking about it. the gun rights activists and the nra don't stop talking about it. they regain the traction they had momentarily lost. there is still hope for that issue, but the president really needs to move on that in january wile also remembering that the first three priorities are the economy, the economy, and the economy. >> how -- i think part of the sad

is picking up steam in the wake of the massacre in sandy hook. several states are proposing gun legislation to allow teachers or other schoolworkers to carry firearms. utah where they have held training for teachers in ten years is seeing a major uptick in firearms training. just yesterday 150 teachers took advantage of the free training, and how to respond to mass violence at school. meantime, arizona's attorney general tom horn is pushing a han to -- joining mess is general tom horne, and david purnell. mr. horne, i want to start with you, public spot is there, there's 64% of americans say that arming teachers is an effective solution, but i want you to take a listen to what the nea president said last hour right here on msnbc. >> policemen you are given incredible training in when and how to shoot a firearm. we've had incidents with even police that innocent bystanders have been killed, the idea that a teacher who receives a course in gun safety is now prepared to deal where the kind of situation in school, it just doesn't makes sense. >> attorney general horne, what do you say to those

debate. now after the mass murder of children at sandy hook elementary school the president is doing something different. he is taking a louder stand the that might endear him to at least one side of the debate. and next month he plans to introduce a gun control agenda and highlight it during the state of the union. meanwhile, california senator dianne feinstein's planning to introduce a bill had a would ban assault weapons as expected. conservative groups are already taking aim at it. on the drudge report, for example, one headline reads civil war senate to go for handguns. now, we were just talking about conservative rhetoric on a different civil war earlier. let's put war aside. let's put the militant language aside and let's talk about what is happening here, maggie. as you know, people follow this debate remember the original assault weapons ban which was itself considered very cosmetic. it was essentially at bottom a ten-year hiatus. it didn't take guns out of circulation. interest didn't deal with the gun show loopholes, background checks, lot of the issues that have come up a
